The January HPNA meeting focused solely on the District 8 and 9 city council races

Candidates running for District 8 and 9 city council seats were invited to our general meeting. Each candidate was given approximately 5-7 minutes to discuss their campaign and how they plan to serve their district. All candidates attended the meeting including:

For District 8 – Highland Park, Southside, MLK, Fortwood, Ferger Place: Dennis Clark, Andrae McGary, Leamon Pierce
For District 9 – Highland Park, Bushtown, Missionary Ridge, East Dale, Glenwood: Quenston Coleman, J.T. McDaniel, Thomas L. Mott, Peter Murphy, Jackie Thomas

HP – on its way to becoming more green!

HPNA applied for a grant from the Neighborhood Partners Program so that we might begin planting trees along several blocks of Highland Park. Great news!! We received a $5,600 award to make our project a reality!

Besides the obvious aesthetic impact of a greener neighborhood, trees are beneficial to the environment (I know, stating the obvious!) and the quality of our air and water. Chattanooga’s City Forester, Gene Hyde, is quoted as saying “A healthy, growing tree is essentially a pollution-eating device and a mini-air conditioner.”

More details about the tree plantings will be posted as we begin to put a formal plan together.

Thanks to Bill Jamieson for taking the lead role on this exciting project!
